TECNAM P92 ECHO

TYPE: Side-by-side lightplane/kitbuilt.

PROGRAMME: First flight 14 March 1993. Prototype P92-J (I-TECN) first flown second quarter 1995 and received type certificate 10 November 1995. Production rate 10 per month by end 2001.

CURRENT VERSIONS: P92: Standard ultralight version (Italian ULM rules).
P92-J: Detail differences in airframe and equipment to comply with JAR-VLA airworthiness requirements. First delivery (002), to US distributor, second quarter 1996; 12 built by 1998; manufacture suspended until 2001, when replaced by upgraded P92-JS. P92-JS: Upgraded version of P-92J with higher-powered Rotax 912 ULS and slightly higher max T-O weight plus increased fuel capacity.
P92-S: Added to range in 1999; redesigned rear cabin with additional window; redesigned wing profile and wingtips, revised engine cowling and windscreen; improvements in performance, as described.
P92 Echo Short-Wing: Version for German market with lower empty weight of 275 kg (606 lb), max T-O weight 550 kg (1,212 lb).
P92 Echo 2000 RG: Retractable landing gear version introduced in 2000. Similar to P92-S, but with shorter (8.70 m; 28 ft 6½ in) wing span and reprofiled flaps and fintips. Fuselage lower surfaces redesigned (rounded and deeper) to accommodate retracted gear; bulged doors provide extra 4 cm (1½ in) of shoulder room.
P92 SeaSky: Amphibious floatplane version first flown 1 July 1997; strake below rear fuselage. Full Lotus floats with optional wheels for land operations. Rotax 912 ULS engine and increased empty and maximum T-O weights.
Echo 80: Either P92 or P92-S available with standard Rotax 912 UL engine.
Echo 100S: Either P92 or P92-S available with optional Rotax 912 ULS engine. Latter variant designated P92 Echo S 100S.

CUSTOMERS: Some 726 delivered by January 2003; six to Cambodian Air Force (first two September 1994); overseas orders currently account for 51 per cent of production, including many to Israel. P92-J and -JS deliveries totalled 21 by February 2003. P92 2000 RG deliveries totalled 29 by mid-2002.

COSTS: P92 2000 RG kit US$32,100 less engine, propeller, fuel tanks and electrical wiring (2001); P92 Echo Short-Wing €50,924 with Jabiru 2200 (2003).

DESIGN FEATURES: Objectives were lightness, simplicity and accessibility for inspection and servicing. Braced single-spar high wing; aerofoil chosen for good performance at low Reynolds number; untapered with 1o 30' dihedral; underside of fuselage mostly flat for ease of kit assembly; large one-piece windscreen, inward-tapered inboard wing leading-edges, large windows in doors; rear view window(s).

FLYING CONTROLS: Manual. Frise ailerons; all-moving tailplane with anti-balance tab; electrically actuated flaps cover half trailing-edge.

STRUCTURE: Fuselage mainly metal except GFRP lower shell of engine cowling and wing leading-edge; ailerons and part of tailplane fabric covered; GFRP rudder tip; tailplane halves can be unpinned and removed quickly for transport; engine cowling removable by undoing four quick latches to reveal whole power plant.

LANDING GEAR: Non-retractable tricycle type with steel leaf main legs attached to bottom of fuselage for easy maintenance; hand-powered hydraulic disc brakes operated together from single lever in cockpit; nosewheel steered from rudder pedals; designed for grass field operation. Wheels 5.00-5 on P92-S and P92-JS; 400-6 on SeaSky. P92 2000 RG nosewheel is 11x4.00, has oleo-pneumatic shock-absorber and retracts rearwards; 14x4 mainwheels retract inward. Both tube legs are mounted on a single cantilever arm.

POWER PLANT: One 59.6 kW (79.9 hp) Rotax 912 UL (P92) or 912A (P92-J) or 73.5 kW (98.6 hp) Rotax 912 ULS flat-four engine; integrated reduction gear driving two-blade wooden propeller: GT-166/146 for Rotax 912 UL; GT-172/164 for Rotax 912 ULS landplane; GT-180/155 for SeaSky.
Limbach 2000 (59.7 kW; 80 hp) and Rotax 582 (47.8 kw; 64.1 hp) two-stroke offered as options for P92; P92 prototype had the latter; 59.7 kW (80 hp) Jabiru 2200 flat-four under trial in 2000; added to options following successful completion of tests; 13 delivered by mid-2001.
P92 Echo Short-Wing has 59.7 kW (80 hp) Jabiru 2200 as standard, with options to fit 59.6 kW (79.9 hp) Rotax 912 UL or 73.5 kW (98.6 hp) Rotax 912 ULS.
Fuel capacity 70 litres (18.5 US gallons; 15.4 Imp gallons) P92 Echo short-wing has 59.7 kW (80 hp) Jabiru 2200 as standard, with options to fit 59.6 kW (79.9 hp) Rotax 912 UL or 73.5 kW (98.6) Rotax 912 ULS in two wing tanks, of which 60 litres (15.9 US gallons; 13.2 Imp gallons) are usable.
P92-JS fuel capacity 90 litres (23.8 US gallons; 19.18 Imp gallons).

ACCOMMODATION: Side-by-side seats with three-point harness; baggage space behind seats. Full dual controls and two throttles. Bulged doors on current versions give increased cabin width.

SYSTEMS: 14 V 55 A battery; 100 W alternator. Optional BRS-5 parachut in P92 2000 RG.

AVIONICS: Customer specified; optional IFR nav/com in P92-J.
